Film the game. Keep the moments that matter.

SpoCam is an iPhone camera for parents, coaches and anyone filming sports. Record the game, mark a play and save a highlight reel afterward.

All features are free, with no new in-app purchases or trial deadline. The advertising-supported version shows compact banners on the review screen after saving.

Requires iOS 18 or later. Video quality, zoom and stabilization depend on your iPhone and recording settings.

Your first recording

  1. Open SpoCam and finish Quick Start. Tap Open Camera to reach the filming screen. This does not start recording.
  2. Allow camera and microphone access. Allow access to Photos when asked so your recording can be saved. You do not need a SpoCam account.
  3. Check the top-right indicators. Make sure you have enough free space and battery. The remaining recording time is an estimate, not a guarantee.
  4. Tap the red Record button. Keep filming and tap GOAL, NICE or BAD when you want to mark a play. You can rename all three buttons.
  5. Stop when you are done. With the initial settings, press and hold the red button to stop. Wait for saving to finish. SpoCam saves the original video and, if you marked any plays, automatically creates a highlight reel.
  6. Review your highlights. On Review Recording, choose your favorite scenes and tap Save Reel to Photos to make another reel. When saving is complete, tap Finish / Record Again.

Find your saved videos in Apple’s Photos app. If saving fails, keep SpoCam installed and follow the instructions under Troubleshooting.

Before filming a full game, make a short test recording and check its picture, sound and saved orientation. Follow the event’s filming rules and respect the people you record.

Highlights and reels

How much of a play is kept?

The initial highlight length is 10 seconds before + 10 seconds after a button press. In Settings → Highlight Length, choose 3, 5, 10 or 15 seconds independently for each side. A mark near the beginning or end of a recording contains only the footage that actually exists.

After any highlight button is pressed, all three highlight buttons are temporarily unavailable for the duration selected under After the Tap. A countdown shows when you can mark another play. The original recording continues.

Can I choose which plays go into a reel?

Yes. Review Recording shows the marked scenes from that recording with thumbnail previews. Scenes are initially selected, up to 100. Change the selection and save another reel. Reels use scenes from the same recording; they do not import unrelated videos from Photos.

Why are there no separate videos for every highlight?

Save Individual Highlight Clips is off initially. The original video and automatic highlight reel can still be saved. Turn this option on in Settings before filming if you also want a separate video for each marked play.

Creating a new reel does not remove your original video or replace a previously saved reel.

Camera controls and settings

  • Zoom: tap a supported zoom level, flick the Flick Zoom control one step at a time, or pinch the camera preview with two fingers. The number in the center of Flick Zoom shows the current zoom. Available lenses and the maximum zoom depend on the iPhone and video mode.
  • Pause and resume: tap Pause, then Resume. The screen orientation stays fixed while paused.
  • Portrait and landscape: rotate your iPhone to change the filming screen, even with the system’s Portrait Orientation Lock on. The saved video’s orientation is set when recording starts; turning the phone during a recording does not turn an existing video into a different shape.
  • Framing Reminder: four quick vibrations remind you to check the screen when the camera points in nearly the same direction for the selected time. It starts enabled at 5 seconds. It does not detect or automatically follow players, faces or the ball.
  • Dim Screen: while recording, press and hold this button to hide the camera preview. Recording continues. Release to see the preview again. This does not put the iPhone to sleep. Battery savings vary by device and brightness.
  • Custom controls: open Settings → Customize Button Layout to move the supported button groups. Settings also lets you rename highlights and choose how recording is stopped.

Video quality and device differences

The initial video quality is 1080p at 30 fps. SpoCam remembers your selection for later use. Choose from the modes supported by your current device and camera setup. The five-minute storage figures are estimates for the original video; highlight reels and separate clips need additional space.

SpoCam does not import the current settings from Apple’s Camera app. Stabilization and framing can also differ from Apple’s Camera.

On the iPhone Duo’s open inner display, the current recording path uses 1080p at 30 fps, HEVC, SDR and a center crop to provide the selected portrait or landscape shape. The outer display can use its supported quality options. Do not assume that every advertised iPhone camera mode is available in every SpoCam configuration.

Memos and timestamps

Use the memo to note a title or other useful details. Timestamps record the marked play times and names, and can be copied for chapter lists on services such as YouTube.

Photos captions and text inside a video are different. Automatic caption entry and updates are supported on iOS 27 or later, with the required Photos permission. On iOS 26 or earlier, including iOS 18, use Copy Timestamps or Copy Memo & Timestamps and paste the text into the video’s caption in Photos yourself.

Add Timestamps to Video is off initially. You can enable it for the original video, the highlight reel, or both, and choose a corner. Adding text makes saving take longer. You cannot start another recording until that saving process finishes.

Free use, ads and privacy choices

There is no new subscription, paid unlock or trial to start. In the advertising-supported version, two banner placements appear at the top and bottom of Review Recording after the recording has been saved. There are no ad placements on the filming or Settings screen.

SpoCam does not request new ads while recording, paused or saving. You do not have to watch or tap an ad, or wait for an ad to load, to record, save or return to the camera. An ad may be delayed or omitted when it cannot be loaded.

Google’s privacy choices may appear where required. If the option is available, open Settings → Ad Privacy Choices to review or change your selection. Choosing not to consent does not lock the camera or other features. Non-personalized advertising still involves information processing; see the SpoCam Privacy Policy.

TestFlight users: the internal English test build uses Google’s sample ads. A sample ad does not mean that paid advertising is active in the App Store version you have installed.

What if I used an old paid version?

Current access does not require a new purchase. Updating or deleting an app does not by itself prove that an older subscription was canceled. If you previously subscribed, check your Apple subscription settings. SpoCam support cannot view your payment card details or change your Apple Account.

Troubleshooting

The preview is black or recording will not start

Check camera and microphone permissions, free space and the selected video quality. Make sure another app is not using the camera. If no recording or save is in progress, close and reopen SpoCam. If Apple’s Camera is also affected, check the device itself before testing again.

A video has not appeared in Photos

Keep SpoCam installed. Check Photos permission and free space, then retry saving from Review Recording. If needed, open Settings → Pending Saves & Past Recordings. Uninstalling can remove the app’s remaining working copy.

Saving is taking a long time

Video length, quality, the number of marked scenes and timestamp overlays affect processing time. Leave the app open while it finishes. For future recordings, keep Add Timestamps to Video off if you need a faster return to the camera. No particular saving time or battery life is guaranteed.

The picture or controls are facing the wrong way

Try changing orientation before recording starts and confirm that recording is not paused. Send support your iPhone model, iOS version, app version, whether the phone was folded or open if applicable, and the orientation that caused the issue.

Can I replay the guide or switch language?

Open Settings → Quick Start to replay the six-page guide. SpoCam supports English and Japanese using the iPhone’s app language preferences. User-entered highlight names and memos are kept as you entered them.
